On Friday, May 1st, Halsey and Marshmello released their first single together titled “Be Kind”. This single comes after the release of Halsey’s third studio album “Manic” as well as a single produced by Bring Me the Horizon for Warner Brother’s original picture soundtrack for the “Birds of Prey: The Album” featuring on track eight’s “Experiment On Me”. Marshmello has been rather quiet this year releasing only a remix EP for “Tongue Tied” as well as two more miscellaneous singles, “Crusade” with SVDDEN DEATH and “Been Thru This Before” with Southside, SAINt JHN, and Giggs. The song finds Halsey trying to both convince her lover that she is hear for them while also pondering why they aren’t there for her; or in other words, she wonders what the meaning of her relationship is. In the line “If you’re going to fight, fight for me” we see Halsey pleading for him to be on her side for once. While she repeatedly says she is there for them and loves them in the lines “I already told you I’m right here, I will stay by your side every night”. The song’s upbeat melody and beat hide the confused and yearning heart hidden in the lyrics. The song shares many similarities lyrically with much of her other work. Halsey seems to share simalar lyrics with the third single from “Manic’s” “You should be sad”. On “You should be sad”, she sings: “Take a broken man right in my hand then put back all his parts”, and on ”Be Kind”, she sings: “I know you’re build to love, but broken now...” The song overall is very well rounded, but it really sticks out for its lyrics. Marshmello does an excellent job creating a perfect and dance worthy beat, while Halsey’s vocals control the song’s tempo. Would recommend. Unfortunately, the song will probably be over-looked due to Drake’s surprise mixtape as well as other artists releasing singles.
So where do we go from here? After this track was released, some may assume that this may be the start of a new musical era for Marshmello, however this is most likely not the case. We can see from his past Joytime projects that Marshmello‘s huge pop singles
have not been placed on the projects. His massive hit with Bastile “Happier”, which peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100, did not make it on his third studio album Joytime III released almost a year later. Actually, it would appear that none of his mainstream pop success songs show up on any of his albums. Could we see a new project from Halsey? It is extremely unlikely that we’d see any new project from Halsey in the seeable future. Most likely not. Her last album was released a little under four months ago. Halsey releases an album every 1.5-2.5 years, and in her earliest, hasn’t started her new era until a littler over a year after the release of her previous effort. Therefore I think it‘s safe to assume that this is nothing more than a single and will not appear on either of these artist‘s future projects.
